Grace is a female border collie that will be 3 years old in January 2014. She is quite the little beauty with her traditional black and white markings, semi rough coat, and weighing in at about 35 lbs. Grace was an owner turn in to BCIN. We were contacted by rescuers in the Norman, Oklahoma who were at full capacity and could not take any more dogs into their program. They did not want Grace to become shelter bound. Transport was arranged to bring Grace to California. Since Grace came from a heartworm area, she was tested and received a heartworm negative diagnosis from a vet.
Her previous owner stated that she could not give the life that Grace deserves and had owned her from the time she was 7 weeks old. Her home environment was spending the day out in a small yard amp; porch without a lot of physical or mental stimulation. At night she would sleep in the laundry room with a child's gate up, so she appears to respect a smaller height. Her previous owner states that she got along with their cat, however, we have no way evaluating this.
Grace does have very nice house manners and is housebroken. Some of Grace's favorite activities are to run and play with her soccer ball. She walks well on a leash, but appears to lack any other formal obedience training. Grace can be very nervous upon first meeting her. She is slow to warm up to some people, while she instantly will take a liking to others. She absolutely craves attention, can't get enough of being petted as she is somewhat needy, and does enjoy being with her person. She had not been with other dogs, but since coming into our program she loves to play and romp with her foster siblings Maxwell and Ren.
Grace is looking for a person to call her very own. Grace exhibits many of the lovely characteristics of this breed. Please do not apply for Grace just because she is pretty. Border Collies are not a breed to be taken lightly, and should be thoroughly researched before adoption to understand their needs and behavior, quirks and all. Grace will thrive under a loyal owner who understands herding breed behavior.
