LAD

|
Lad is a striking 1 year-old male white and sable patterned Border Collie with a semi-rough coat and the most adorable floppy ears. Most folks don’t know that BCs are quite diverse in color, so here is a link to the Border Collie Museum describing this color pattern: Sable Border Collie. Lad was found wandering around in a gated community in Bakersfield. He was probably dumped there to fend for himself. A good Samaritan living in the complex tried to find his owner, however, to no avail. He was taken to a vet where he was vaccinated, and scanned for a microchip. No such luck. Lad was in good shape despite being homeless. He did not want Lad to go to the shelter and risk euthanasia. BCIN was contacted about this darling yearling, so how could we resist? My initial reaction to Lad upon first seeing him was “What a beautiful dog!”
Although initially nervous, Lad accepted his new chapter in life quite well. He was transported to BCIN where he was directly taken to the vet to be bathed and sterilized. Lad has not had any training, so his adopter will need to be willing to work with him from square one, teaching Lad all of the basics from obedience, socialization, and house manners. Lad can be initially shy upon first meeting him, but once he gives you the “once over” he is just fine. This boy is affectionate and wants to be with his human and foster siblings. His foster home is starting to take him out for walks and teaching him socialization skills outside the home. Lad wants to please, so he really will be a cinch to train. Lad loves to romp with his foster siblings and gets along well in a dog pack environment. He has not been destructive, however, the person who found him said he was a bit destructive at his house, as he did not have any dogs for Lad to play with. Based upon this observation, Lad would probably not like being an only dog, as he could become bored very easily, given his age. Lad has made himself right at home in his foster home. He is now showing his personality as he has settled into his new environment. He is not a dominant male, as he gets along well with both males and female dogs. He is not an incessant barker, but he will bark appropriately. He has medium high energy, which is consistent with a dog his age. Lad will need activity in his life, so he would make a good hiking or running partner. Lad does have a prey drive, so he requests a home without cats or other small pocket pets. Lad will crate under protest, but he is learning to be crate trained and is improving each day.
Lad is biddable and wants to learn. He is looking for his special person who is patient and will commit to training him. Under proper tutelage, Lad will blossom into a fantastic dog. If you are dog savvy and love teaching your dog new tricks, then Lad would be perfect for your lifestyle. |
