REX
Rex
Rex is a beautiful male 12-16 month-old black & white semi-rough coat Border Collie.  Rex has just entered our rescue program and was relinquished to us by another rescue who didn't understand Border Collie behavior and wanted the best for Rex.  This teenager has had several homes in his first year of life and was returned to rescue because his adopters were uneducated about the breed.  Rex is looking for his permanet home where he can be useful and have a job to do.

Rex came into this rescue with food aggression issues and he also liked to grab soft items (ie towels, plush toys, food from the trash or paper).  He would be very protective of them when they were taken away from him.  He would snap at the hands, and did not like to be grabbed or held by his collar.  In his current foster home, where he has lived for the last 4 months, he has become much calmer, the food aggressive and resource guarding behaviors have almost disappeared.  Rex now allows other dogs to share treats.  He is still very inquisitive, but now allows you to take objects from his mouth and responds well to firm verbal commands.

Rex walks nicely on a leash, knows basic commands, and loves to have his stomach rubbed.  He gets along with other dog-friendly canines, big and small.  He loves to jump on the table (also called counter surfing) if allowed, but learns quickly and responds well to corrections.  Rex is housebroken and enjoys the company of his family in the house, but can stay outdoors during the day.  He is not a constant barker, but warns if people come to the house.

Rex is still a very young dog, full of energy and a desire to please.  Children should be dog experienced and probably older than 10 years of age as he is 55 lbs and can jump on the child causing a fall.  Again, once he learns the routine, he is not a constant jumper.  He is very smart and loves social contact, including during his meals.

Rex is looking for a home for the BC savvy person who understands this breed.  He would not be a good candidate for the first time BC owner, as this is how Rex came to be in our rescue program.  Rex requires activity in his life and his adopter needs to be committed to channeling his physical and emotional energy in a positive way.

Update: Sept. 2009
Rex has really matured in the past few months, much quieter and responds to direction. He can even wait his turn for his snacks and is trusted in the house. He still needs someone who is dog experienced as he will test, but once he knows the rules, he really likes the limits. He allows you to trim his nails and takes his fish oil pills without a fuss. Structure and consistency is a must as he has been through so many homes and is fearful of being rejected.

Rex is being fostered in Riverside County.
