Susie is a rambunctious young female Border Collie Mix (probably with some flat coated retriever) who is about just under a year. She is mostly black with some white on her chest and some whit tipping on her paws. She has a beautiful and shiny semi rough coat. Here are some observations from Susie’s foster home about her temperament:
Susie is housebroken. Susie has become comfortable with her foster mom and her foster siblings in which she is starting to express herself. At first, none of my dogs would want to play with her because she is a bit rowdy. That has all now changed as they will now all play together. She would chase after a toy I'd thrown for her foster sibling and she will steal it if sees the opportunity. She is learning fetch and has even brought back the ball back to me a few times today!
Susie loves to follow you around the house and to lay down by your foot. She is fine with sleeping overnight in a crate. No whining, barking, nor any potty accidents. She has good manners like sitting, laying down, or rolls on her back when taking food treats. She respects other dogs and their space. She likes to go on walks, but prefers to do her business at home. She pulls a bit on the leash, but would not drag you down and stops when you stop. She got reactive with other barking dogs, but stopped immediately when I yelled "NO!!!" directly at Susie. Since then, Susie has been better with the other dogs and is carefully watching my other dog in a more respectful manner. She spooks easily with loud noises and sudden moves. I feel she would be fine and overcome this with regular walks and outside-the-house socialization.
Susie can be quite timid when a stranger tries to approach her. It seems difficult for her to trust humans in the situation even you had food treats She is more comfortable if you'd let her come up to you with her pace. It would be hard to keep her off once she is convinced you are her friend. She is comfortable staying in the backyard all by herself although much prefer to stay inside if she had the choice. I was worried she might try to open the wooden gate. Susie is agile and would jump over ex-pens if she wants. She has NOT made an attempt to escape from the closed wooden gate.
Susie would make a fantastic canine companion, but due to her being shy and a bit energetic, I would not recommend her in home with small children. She will require a home that understands how to socialize a dog and help build her confidence so that she will blossom into a well adjusted adult dog. Her adopters should be committed to taking her to obedience training.
