Welcome!
SIR SCRUFFSALOT
Sir Scruffsalot
Scruffy is an adorable 2-3 year old terrier/border collie mix who weighs around 30 lbs.  I’ve come to describe him best with a capital “C” -- as in the best Companion dog ever!  (Well, maybe not ever, but he sure is a standout).  He came to us missing a few patches of fur, lots of scabs on his body and underweight, but after being in his foster home for a few months, he is now in excellent shape.  All of Scruffy’s hair has grown back and he is such a cutey pie that people always fuss over how cute he is.  When his first foster mom brought him home, she wasn’t even able to pet him -- he was that hand shy . I’m thinking the shelter experience must have set him back a little bit as he very quickly blossomed once he settled in to my home.  His teeth are in very good shape, with very little tarter on them.

We have learned, over the time he’s been in foster, that this is one smart cookie who quickly senses something’s up during adoption appointments.  He doesn’t go willingly with strangers and doesn’t always “show well” when he thinks he’ll have to change homes again.  I’ve shown Scruffy to a couple and their dog on my front porch for 45 minutes where he was fine, but very stoic, and once I let him back in the house with the other dogs, the second he hit the floor, he was like “Hi everybody, I’m back!”.  Despite this, I can assure you he will bond with his new owner once he realizes he’s home.

Scruffy exhibits typical Terrier behavior: smart, aloof, suspicious, and clever.  He will need not just an experienced dog owner, but a strong alpha owner.  He lives with many other dogs, and gets along well with most of them, but does present boldness at times when the world doesn’t go the way he thinks it should.  I just tell him to “Ah, ah, ah”, putting my two fingers on his throat, and he stops his behavior.

So here’s what’s best about Scrappy (which is one of the many names we fondly call him).  He follows voice commands extremely well.  He can go off leash (loves to jump in the car and go with you on any journey you offer), and loves to go for walks, and run, with his master.  He generally does not bark (which is amazing for a terrier) except for when I first get home or when the other dogs are playing really hard outside.  He also does not bark at outside noises which, again, is quite rare for a terrier.

Scruffy doesn’t mind getting a bath and is a great boy in the tub.  He is also one of the best bed buddies I’ve ever had – he cuddles up real nice and likes to give you kisses.  Surprisingly, Scruffs doesn’t seem to have a super strong small animal prey drive like most terriers.  He was fine with cats in his first foster home and although he leaves my parrot alone, he does show some interest in them.  Scruffy is a great athlete who can jump very high so he will need a home with at least a 6 foot fence.

Scruffy is a star in the crate, but he would prefer to ride shotgun with you. He is one of the best car riders ever and just a blast to take with you everywhere!  He is the PERFECT guest when you take him places.  Just be aware that it takes him a while to warm up.  He really likes men, but he LOVES woman.  One of the absolute best things about Scruffs is the way he quietly and sometimes sneakily stares at you when you have him out in public.  It’s hysterical how he looks at you like you are his whole life, but he does it very much on the sly.

Scruffy would make a great dog for someone who lives in an apartment or condo.  He would also be completely fine as an only dog.  AND, he would be great for an older person.  He is such a buddy and will bring great joy to his new adopter.  A few months ago, I took him to my sister’s for a sleep over and I was blown away at what an angel he was.  Not only was he excellent with my niece and nephew, but his house manners were impeccable.

Due to the fact that Scruffy is extremely bright, well mannered, tightly bonded and so responsive, I believe he has the ability to learn very well and could probably due agility or flyball.  We think he is a diamond in the rough.

We are very proud to have saved Scruffs’ life as he was in a very high kill shelter with not much of a chance of being adopted he’s definitely more terrier than BC, but what a great, great dog.  In return, he would like to thank you by being one of your best pets ever!

Sir Scruffsalot is being fostered in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County.
